Contribution of genetic and environmental factors to individual differences in maximal walking speed with and without second task in older women

2005

Background. Among older people, distraction while walking may increase the risk of falls. Factors underlying individual differences in dual tasking are not fully understood. Our aim was to study the effect of a second task on maximal walking speed and to examine whether individual differences in walking speed measured with and without a second task are accounted for by genetic and environmental influences shared across tasks or specific to each task. Methods. The data were collected from the 101 monozygotic and 116 dizygotic twin pairs aged 63–76 years recruited from the Finnish Twin Cohort. Maximal walking speed (MWS) over 10 m was measured on a laboratory corridor and timed with photocell…

Genetic analysis of Citrus aurantium L. (Rutaceae) cultivars by ISSR molecular markers

2011

Eight cultivars of Citrus aurantium L., showing peculiar morphological traits of the fruits and leaves, were analyzed genetically. Inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) was chosen as molecular markers because they represent a highly efficient system for investigating variability at intraspecific level. The particular morphological traits were discussed, the genetic identity and distance matrix based on Nei index was calculated, and the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) dendrogram was generated. A total of 53 clearly distinguished DNA bands were considered for the ISSR analysis of which 24 were polymorphic. A basic C. aurantium fingerprinting pattern was obtained. The I…

The impact of the Eurofever criteria and the new Infevers MEFV classification in real life: results from a large international FMF cohort

2022

INTRODUCTION: New Eurofever/PRINTO classification criteria (EPCC) for Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) and other recurrent fevers have been recently developed, together with the classification of the pathogenicity of MEFV variants. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact in real life of both the EPCC and INSAID pathogenicity classification of MEFV variants in the large international Eurofever FMF cohort. METHODS: Baseline demographic, genetic and clinical data of FMF patients included in the Eurofever registry were evaluated. The EPCC and the 2018 INSAID classification for MEFV variants were applied in all eligible FMF patients. RESULTS: Since November 2009, clinical information was available …

Genotyping of the genus Proteus by rpoB sequence analysis

2005

Background. The genetic relationship among different species within the genus Proteus has still not been clarified and previous studies by rRNA gene restriction patterns (ribotypes) suggested a high genetic variability in the presently recognised nomenspecies. Methods. The usefulness of rpoB sequencing for inter- and intraspecies discrimination in the genus Proteus was evaluated on 11 type and clinical strains belonging to the four described species: P. penneri, P. vulgaris, P. mirabilis, and P. myxofaciens. Results. The rpoB sequencing proved able to characterise the different species, showing six well defined rpoB sequence groups in the 1153 bp region analysed. P. myxofaciens and P. mirab…

TP53 mutations and S-phase fraction but not DNA-ploidy are independent prognostic indicators in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma

2005

To prospectively evaluate the prognostic significance of TP53, H-, K-, and N-Ras mutations, DNA-ploidy and S-phase fraction (SPF) in patients affected by locally advanced laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). Eight-one patients (median follow-up was 71 months) who underwent resective surgery for primary operable locally advanced LSCC were analyzed. Tumor DNA was screened for mutational analysis by PCR/SSCP and sequencing. DNA-ploidy and SPF were performed by flow cytometric analyses. Thirty-six patients (44%) had, at least, a mutation in the TP53 gene. Of them, 22% (8/36) had double mutations and 3% (1/36) had triple mutations. In total, 46 TP53 mutations were observed. The majority (41…
